On 18 and 19 September 2025, we hosted our 4th annual SLEC CommCare Symposium, organised by the SLEC CommCare Academy. The event brought together 14 speakers and close to 400 participants including caregivers, community care experts, and members of the faith community. It featured dedicated tracks on wound care, and dementia and spirituality.

Wounds to Wholeness: Bridging the Gap from Injury to Recovery

We kicked off day one of the symposium with a deep dive into wound care, featuring leading voices in the field who shared insights on the latest advances in wound care and the challenges of wound healing. Participants also took part in practical workshops, deepening their understanding of complex wound management through wound debridement exercises and case study investigations.

“Don’t just look at the hole, but at the patient as a whole.”
Ms Susie Goh, Director of Nursing, SLEC

With this powerful reminder, participants reflected on how wounds affect not only the body but also a person’s psychological and social well-being. It set the stage for how we approach wound care as we journey with others through recovery – reminding us that true recovery calls for a holistic approach that nurtures the body, mind and spirit.

Sustaining Faith, Sharing Hope and Supporting Love: Spiritual Care for People with Dementia

On day two, caregivers and faith leaders gathered to discuss and learn how spiritual care can support people living with dementia. Through breakout sessions, participants explored practical strategies and creative approaches, such as reminiscence therapy and music, to enrich the lives of those they care for.

“As caregivers, you are the storyteller for the person you care for. The question is: what story would you like to tell for your loved one living with dementia?”
Adj A/Prof (Dr) Kenny Tan, CEO, SLEC

Together, we reflected on the deeper purpose of caregiving – one that goes beyond managing the symptoms of dementia, to shaping a narrative of dignity and meaning for our loved ones.

The symposium was more than a gathering of experts – it was a shared journey of learning and reflection that inspired us to reimagine how we approach caregiving. We look forward to continuing these meaningful conversations at the next SLEC CommCare Symposium!
