Elders “Travel” the World with Our Award-Winning SLEC Virtual World Programme
From Tiananmen Square to the rolling hills of New Zealand, our elders have been embarking on a trip around the world. Through our award-winning SLEC Virtual World programme, elders are virtually teleported to their dream holiday destinations. For some, they had the opportunity to revisit cherished places; for others, they experienced “travel” for the very first time.
Our Virtual World programme has been recognised with two awards this year: the OpenGov Asia Recognition of Excellence Award 2025 in May and the 13th Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Award 2025 (Technology – Social Engagement) in April. These honours highlight our excellence in using technology to drive innovation and enhance our services for our elders. More than just technology, the awards also reflect our commitment to meeting their needs with dignity, delight, and discovery.

Powered by SilVR Adventure, the programme uses Virtual Reality (VR) headsets to create immersive travel experiences for the elders—stimulating cognitive engagement, inspiring joyful conversations, and fostering social connections, all from the comfort of SLEC facilities. This experience is especially meaningful for those with physical limitations or who may be experiencing isolation.
“I’ve always wanted to see Angkor Wat but I cannot climb stairs anymore. Ever since I had my fall, I could no longer travel. This Virtual World experience lets me explore the countries on my bucket list that I may never get to visit again.”
– Mdm Tan Joo Kian, who took a virtual journey to the stunning Angkor Wat through VR goggles
These virtual sessions are not only about sightseeing — they bring joy, spark conversations about lifelong dreams, and remind our elders that the world is still theirs to discover. At SLEC, this is just a glimpse of the many meaningful experiences we’re creating through technology and care.
